The Crafted Life

Every life is being woven.

Every day we make something.

We make conversations and friendships. We make homes and gardens. We make bread and music. We make sermons and prayers. We make mistakes and, by God's grace, we make amends.

Some of us also make things with our hands—cloth, wood, yarn, pottery, paint or words.

The Crafted Life begins with the conviction that none of these are separate from our faith.

The God revealed in Scripture is the first and greatest Craftsman. He speaks creation into being, forms humanity from the dust of the earth, fills Bezalel with artistic skill to build the Tabernacle, and, in Jesus Christ, enters His own creation as the son of a carpenter.

Creation, craftsmanship and redemption are woven together throughout the biblical story.

If we are made in God's image, then our creativity is not an accident—it is part of our calling.

A Life Woven Together

For many years I have been privileged to serve as an Anglican priest. Alongside preaching, teaching and pastoral ministry I have always found myself drawn to making things.

I spin fleece into yarn.

I weave cloth on a handloom.

I enjoy baking, writing, designing, restoring and creating.

At first these seemed like separate interests.

Gradually I realised they were all expressions of the same vocation.

The loom taught me patience. The spinning wheel taught me attentiveness. Bread taught me hospitality. Writing taught me clarity. Parish ministry taught me that people, like cloth, are strengthened not by isolated threads but by being woven together in community.

The Crafted Life was born from that discovery.

More Than a Collection of Crafts

This is not simply a website about weaving, spinning or traditional skills. Neither is it only a place for theology. It is where faith and craftsmanship meet.

Here you will find reflections on Scripture alongside articles about wool. Ancient Christian practices alongside traditional handcrafts. Thoughts on prayer beside weaving drafts.

Stories from parish life alongside lessons learned at the spinning wheel. Each explores the same question:

How might we become people whom God is patiently crafting into the likeness of Christ?

A Rule for Living

Rooted in Christ

Everything begins with prayer, Scripture and worship.

Like the warp threads on a loom, these are held under constant tension, giving strength and direction to everything else.

Craft with Wonder

Whatever we make deserves care, patience and excellence.

Whether weaving cloth, preparing a sermon, baking bread or writing an article, craftsmanship becomes an act of gratitude to the God who first made us.

Live Generously

Beautiful things are not meant simply to be admired but shared.

Hospitality, encouragement, generosity and kindness are themselves forms of craftsmanship that shape lives.

Serve the Community

Faith is always lived among neighbours.

The Crafted Life is deeply rooted in parish ministry, community life and the conviction that love becomes visible through practical service, justice and compassion.

Keep the Rhythm

Modern life urges us to hurry.

The Gospel invites us into a different rhythm.

Prayer and work.

As this vision developed, it naturally became a personal Rule of Life—not a list of rules, but a pattern of living that keeps Christ at the centre.

Five threads run through everything on these pages.

Silence and conversation.

Making and resting.

Learning and teaching.

Giving and receiving.

Like the shuttle passing steadily across the loom, these rhythms gradually create something beautiful.

Slow Enough to Notice God

Much of modern life prizes speed.

Craft teaches something different.

The spinner cannot hurry twist.

The weaver cannot skip the warp.

The baker cannot rush fermentation.

The gardener cannot force the seasons.

Neither can the Christian life.

God rarely works at the pace we demand. Instead, He patiently shapes us through thousands of ordinary moments.

The Crafted Life is an invitation to slow down sufficiently to notice His presence in everyday work and ordinary grace.

Beauty That Serves

Beauty matters.

Not because it impresses people, but because it reflects something of the Creator.

A carefully woven blanket offers warmth. A well-made loaf nourishes. A thoughtfully written article encourages. A welcoming church offers hope. Beauty reaches its fullest purpose when it serves others. That is true craftsmanship.

An Invitation

Whether you are a spinner or a preacher, an artist or an engineer, a baker or a gardener, retired or just beginning your journey, my hope is that these pages encourage you to see your daily life with fresh eyes.

God is already at work in the ordinary.

He is weaving grace through routine.

He is shaping character through patient practice.

He is crafting saints through everyday faithfulness.

Perhaps the greatest work we will ever make is not something produced by our hands.

Perhaps it is the life that God is making within us.

As St Paul writes:

"For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works,

which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life."
Ephesians 2.10
